Check back again . . . More exciting activities will be announced at a later date. Past activities have included a specimen ID contest, geosciences themed pumpkin carving contest, scavenger hunt, and geocaching activities, among others!
What is it and Why celebrate? Earth Science Week
"We derive energy from a variety of sources, whose origins range from the sun to forces deep within the Earth. Specific energy sources widely used today include fossil fuels such as coal, oil, and natural gas, as well as 'alternative' and renewable energy sources such as geothermal, nuclear, solar, hydroelectric, biomass and wind power.
Geoscience professionals, educators, and students study the Earth system-- natural processes linking the atmosphere, hydrosphere, geosphere, and biosphere-- to answer important questions: How can we best locate and capture energy resources? How can we most efficiently use and conserve them to minimize waste and pollution? And how is our energy use affecting, and affected by, other natural processes?"
-Geoff Camphire, Manager, Outreach Programs, American Geological Institute
The American Geological Institute established Earth Sciences Week in 1998 to raise awareness of the geosciences and their importance to sociey. It is supported by the US Geological survey, NASA, NOAA, the National Park Service, and the AAPG Foundation.
