FHSU unveils new booth at the Kansas State Fair
09/04/2001

HAYS, KS -- Friends and alumni of Fort Hays State University -- and prospective students -- will discover a new look when they visit the Kansas State Fair from Friday, Sept. 7, through Sunday, Sept. 16.

Instead of using the standard pre-manufactured architecture of most booths, the FHSU booth will have a large, colorful backdrop that features Victor E. Tiger, the school mascot. Volunteers from Fort Hays State will hand out free university bookmarks, free Victor E. Tiger stickers, and free coupons for discounts at the museum store in the Sternberg Museum of Natural History during the visit of "The Dinosaurs of Jurassic Park," from Feb. 2 to May 5, 2002.

More importantly, booth workers will provide detailed information about the university. Flyers about academic departments and courses of study will be available, and comprehensive information about Fort Hays State University can be accessed at the touch of a finger on laptop computers that are connected to the university's home page on the Internet: www.fhsu.edu.

The FHSU booth is located in the middle of the popular Meadowlark Building, which is in the southwest corner of the fairgrounds in Hutchinson.

Some university departments will have special days at the FHSU booth. Representatives from the FHSU Department of Agriculture will be available to answer questions on both Friday and Saturday, Sept. 7 and 8. The schedule for faculty and students from other departments includes: Biology on Sunday, Sept. 9; Mathematics and Computer Science on Monday, Sept. 10; Leadership Studies on Tuesday, Sept. 11; the Graduate School on Wednesday, Sept. 12, and Thursday, Sept. 13; Art on Thursday, Sept. 13; the Sternberg Museum on Friday, Sept. 14; the Virtual College on Monday, Sept. 10, and Friday, Sept. 14; Physics on Saturday, Sept. 15; and Nursing on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 15 and 16.

In addition, alumni and friends of Fort Hays State University from all over the state will be able to greet one another at a special event on the opening day of the Kansas State Fair. The FHSU Alumni Association will be in the Encampment Building, on the north side of the fairgrounds, from 5-8 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 7.

All alumni and friends are welcome to stop by, enjoy a sandwich buffet and find out about the latest in FHSU happenings, including academics, athletic action and enrollment trends at the university. Several FHSU personalities will be present, including Dr. Edward H. Hammond, president of FHSU. Victor E. Tiger will also be on hand for photo opportunities. The cost is $7.50 for adults and $5 for students and includes a sandwich buffet and drinks, free Kansas State Fair gate admission, free decorative FHSU Tiger tag or mouse pad, and a chance to win Tiger memorabilia.

Contact alumni host Carlos Murphy, 1959 graduate, at (620) 662-8549 or call the FHSU Alumni Office at 1-888-351-3591 to make reservations.

Fort Hays State University, which was founded in 1902, has already begun events leading to its Centennial in 2002, so this will be a great year to visit the FHSU booth at the Kansas State Fair.
