08/07/2001

HAYS, KS -- From wacky FROGZ, dealings with the devil and world class orchestras, Fort Hays State University's special events committee has a variety of entertaining and captivating programs in store for the 2001-2002 Encore Series.

The season will begin with Street Sounds in concert at 8 p.m. Monday, Sept. 4. Street Sounds is a Berkley-based, a cappella quintet that was formed in 1989 by Louise Robinson. The quintet is committed to performing traditional, contemporary and original songs that embody the rhythms, history and the influence of "Mother Africa" on world music.

The second encore act will be Damn Yankees at 8 p.m. Monday, Oct. 22. In this Broadway classic, middle-aged baseball fanatic Joe Boyd trades his soul to the devil, the charming Mr. Applegate, for a chance to lead his favorite team to victory in the pennant race against the New York Yankees.

At 8 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 10, Vanities by Jack Heifner will take the Encore Series stage. This laugh-out-loud comedy about the growth of a friendship among three small- town women stars Heather Tom, two-time Emmy Award winning actress from The Young and The Restless, Stacy Keanan from My Two Dads and Step by Step and MTV's Emily Kay.

The fall semester Encore Series offerings will conclude with the legendary sounds of The Lettermen at 8 p.m. Monday, Nov. 19. The Lettermen have received nine gold albums and scores of top singles.

Kicking off the spring semester of the Encore Series will be The Brazilian Guitar Quartet performing at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 24. The quartet showcases the talent of four of the most brilliant guitarists alive today, featuring Grammy nominee Paul Gilbraith, Edelton and Everton Goleden, and Tadeu do Amaral.

Back by popular demand at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 20, the Imago Theatre will perform their new production FROGZ. A theatrical menagerie of wonder, whimsy and wackiness, FROGZ is "creature-theater" at its best.

At 3 p.m. on Sunday, March 3, I Musici De Montreal, a world-class chamber orchestra will perform on the Encore series stage. The orchestra will feature pianist Anton Kuert and will be under the direction of Yuli Turovsky.Ending the Encore series for 2001-2002 will be the Ballet Concierto De Puerto Rico, performing at 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 17. This leading Hispanic classical ballet company will perform Carmen and Latinissimo. Carmen is a stunning work commissioned from Miami City Ballet's Jimmy Gamonet de los Heros and based on the music of Bizet.

Latinissimo is a ballet concept created by five of the most distinguished Hispanic choreographers using music by Latin American and Caribbean composers including Gloria Estefan, Julio Iglesias and Ricky Martin.

All performances will take place in the Beach/Schmidt Performing Arts Center in Sheridan Hall on the FHSU campus. For more information on ticket prices, reservations or additional information, contact FHSU by phone (785) 628-5308 or visit the Encore Series Web site.
