Kansas Youth Leadership Academy prepares for summer leadership camps
05/11/2005

HAYS, KS -- Fort Hays State University's Kansas Youth Leadership Academy will sponsor five leadership camps for middle and high school students throughout the state this summer. These camps will provide students with a comprehensive and in-depth study of leadership.

Each Kansas Youth Leadership Camp promotes positive and healthy lifestyles, character building and leadership development. Utilizing university faculty, college students, secondary educators, and community leaders from around the state, these camps will serve to challenge and seek personal commitment to leadership.

The academy provides camps for both middle school and high school students. Middle school students are invited to attend a two-day, one-night camp while high school students are encouraged to attend a three-day, two-night camp.

These camps are held in three locations throughout the state. The first two camps will be held on the FHSU campus in Hays with the middle school camp on June 5-6 and the high school camp on June 7-9. The next middle school camp will be at Butler County Community College in El Dorado on June 26-27. The last two camps will be near Lawrence at the Tall Oaks Conference Center with the high school camp on July 9-11 and the middle school camp on July 24-25.

During the camps, students are given the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of activities, including a leadership competition called the Amazing Race: Academy-style; a ropes course; a project to understand civic leadership and responsibility; and several leadership development workshops. Campers are also given the opportunity to network and form friendships with students from throughout the state of Kansas through activities such as pool parties or hot dog roasts, which will vary with each specific camp.

While the camps will cover the same topics covered in each of the academy seminars held throughout the fall and spring, it will give students a much more in-depth view of each of the six themes: integrity, leadership concepts, teamwork, effective communication, diversity appreciation, and citizenship.

Each camp has two separate registration deadlines. Signing up before the first deadline, the early bird deadline, entitles the camper to a discount. For middle school camps, the early bird discount is $20 off of the regular price of $115. For high school camps, the early bird discount is $25 off of the regular price of $175.

If you have any questions about the camps, deadlines, or would like to register a student, please go to the KYLA website at www.developingleaders.org or contact the academy by phone at (785) 628-5399.
