HAYS, KS --- Former Fort Hays State University custodian William Befort, recently deceased, has offered a gift to future students.
Befort's estate recently contacted FHSU's Endowment Association and informed them that he had left a fund to be used for education majors attending the university.
Befort's parents died while he and his 12 brothers and sisters were still young. All of them managed to complete the eighth grade, but couldn't afford to attend high school or college.
After a number of odd jobs and a stint in the oil fields, Befort moved to Hays and became a janitor at FHSU, a position he held for 16 years.
When asked about her brother's desire to establish the fund, Jane Gottschalk responded that "Bill wanted to help students have the opportunity to have an education that our family never had."
