Student Research Showcase winners announced

HAYS, KS -- Sigma Xi, the Scientific Research Society at Fort Hays State University, sponsored the first-ever Student Research Showcase on April 27 in the Black and Gold Ballroom in the FHSU Memorial Union.

All undergraduate and graduate science students who have participated in research at FHSU were invited to present their research at the showcase. In the undergraduate category, 13 students submitted posters while nine students took part in the graduate section of the contest.

A committee of several FHSU faculty members judged the posters.

Awards were presented in the undergraduate and graduate categories. First-place prize winners received a $100 gift certificate from the FHSU Bookstore. Second prize was a $50 gift certificate from the bookstore and third prize was a $25 gift certificate from the bookstore.

Jesse Shaver, Schoenchen senior, took first place in the undergraduate category with his poster "Treatment of Spatial and Temporal Evolution of Femtosecond Laser Pulses." Yolanda Salinas, Merriam senior, claimed second place for undergraduates with her poster "False Memory: A Replica of Rodieger and McDermott." Stephen Black, Medicine Lodge senior, and Joshua Leck, Washington senior, shared third-place honors for undergraduates. Black's poster was titled "High-Density Infrared Fabrication of Titanium Composites." Leck's poster was titled "Purification and Characterization of the L-Frutose Transporter."

Douglas Clore, WaKeeney graduate student, was awarded first place in the graduate section with his poster "The Brief Symptom Inventory and Juvenile Offenders: Is There a Difference?" Second place among graduates was awarded to Mark Omura, Connelly, NY, graduate student, for his poster "Taxonomy and Distribution of Mexican Woodrats in Southeastern Colorado." Jennifer Hackney, Colorado Springs, CO, 601 W. Harrison St., graduate student, took third place in the graduate category with her poster "Bone Morphogenic Proteins During Chick Heart Development."

Dwight Wray, assistant professor of biological sciences, said the event was largely a success with several FHSU faculty and students in attendance.

"The posters were really outstanding and the judges had a very difficult time selecting the winners. The poster session was a huge success and we look forward to another showcase next year," Wray said.
