Herndon Clinic program seeks to help hearing-impaired maintain, improve communication abilities

HAYS, KS -- People suffering from hearing loss can get help communicating from the Geneva Herndon Speech-Language-Hearing Clinic at Fort Hays State University through its 28th Annual Aural Rehabilitation Program on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from April 17 to May 3.

"People with any degree of hearing loss may find themselves in situations where they have trouble understanding spoken message," said Dr. Fred Britten, professor of communication disorders and coordinator of the program.

The purpose of the program is to help people with hearing loss use visual information to supplement what is heard, help them adjust to a new hearing aid or to use a hearing aid more effectively, and to help the hearing-impaired person and family adjust to hearing loss.

Britten said the program may include training in lip-reading, listening, instruction and various other strategies to help compensate for hearing loss.

The instruction is offered through group and individual instruction and activities to help strengthen communication skills, through discussion of the effects of hearing loss on individuals and their families, and through informative presentations about hearing, hearing loss and effective communication strategies.

Britten said the series is helpful in another way: "It is a unique opportunity for people with hearing loss to meet other people who are experiencing similar problems."

Pre-enrollment is requested, but people may enroll at the door, also. The cost for the entire three-week series is only $15. Family members or friends of people enrolled in the series are welcome to attend sessions at no cost.

"The hearing-impaired and their friends and family should find the program extremely beneficial," said Britten. "It is designed to help individuals with hearing loss maintain and enhance communication skills in their everyday environment."

Sessions will be from 3-4:30 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons in Albertson Hall, room 104, on the campus of Fort Hays State.
