HAYS, KS --- In celebration of Global Youth Service Day, planned for Saturday, April 21, ProjectSERV AmeriCorps will renovate the Wooster playground at Fort Hays State University.
"Currently, the playground has one existing structure which will be repaired, sanded and weatherized," said Debra Ring, director of ProjectSERV.
"We will also be installing some smaller pieces of playground equipment and doing extensive landscaping."
Some of the playground projects planned include a basketball court, sand box, flower boxes, garden areas and a 10-foot radius fall zone around the playground equipment using wood chips.
Leadership 301 student and AmeriCorps member Janet Zimmerman, Hays junior, made the contacts that eventually added ProjectSERV, Leadership Hays, FHSU's Alumni Association, Teaming for Tots and Wal-Mart to the list of contributors and participants.
AmeriCorps member Noalee McDonald, Beloit graduate, petitioned Ring and was allowed to write an Able to Serve grant that brought additional funds to the project, raising the total to $5,250.
"We will culminate this day of service with a celebration," said Brenda Craven, assistant director of ProjectSERV. "A barbecue is planned for all volunteers and residents of Wooster in addition to music, games and face painting activities for the children."
Individuals interested in participating in the Wooster playground project may contact Ring at (785) 628-5977.
