HAYS, KS -- Two candidate forums concerning upcoming elections in the Hays community will be held at 7 p.m. March 26 and 27 in the Black and Gold Ballroom of the Memorial Union on the FHSU campus. The forums are sponsored by the Docking Institute for Public Affairs at Fort Hays State University.
On March 26, the forum will focus on the five candidates vying for seats on the USD 489 School Board. The following evening, the focus will be on the six candidates contending for positions on the Hays City Commission.
Dr. Richard Heil, chair of the Department of Political Science and Justice Studies, will serve as the moderator for the forums. Both evenings the event will be broadcast live by radio station KAYS-AM, which can be found at 1400 on your dial.
Each candidate will be allowed a three-minute opening statement. Questions will then be taken from media persons in attendance followed by questions from audience at the forum and those called in by the radio audience. Candidates will then be given two minutes to make a closing statement.
A call-in number will be given during the forum for the radio audience.
Heil said the Docking Institute has sponsored these types of candidate forums for approximately the past 10 years in hopes of raising voter awareness.
"The mission of the Institute is public service. Through these programs, we hope to provide a service to the community and better inform voters, allowing for well-informed voters on election day."
The vote for these offices will be held in Hays on April 3.
