HAYS, KS -- Salina area residents have a new educational opportunity in information technology. Fort Hays State University is offering four online courses specifically to support the Salina region.
These are Internetworking Certification I & II (Cisco Certification), Introduction to Web Development, Advanced Web Development, and Unix Administration.
These courses will be offered via the Internet. An informational meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 11, at Salina South High School, room 319. Faculty from FHSU will visit with prospective students and demonstrate online curriculum.
According to Mark Bannister, chair of the Department of Information Networking and Telecommunications at FHSU, "These courses are designed for either the working adult who wants to upgrade his or her skills or high school students who want an early start on college. Because they are online, people have time and place flexibility."
"The internetworking courses provide the preparation to sit for Cisco's Certified Network Associate (CCNA), which is the most sought after IT certification in the industry today," said Angela Eggers, instructor of information networking and telecommunications.
Eggers added, "The internetworking certification courses are supported by FHSU's Virtual Lab that allows online Internet router configuration practice and simulations. The internetworking courses also include lab kits, test preparation materials, and 1-800 toll-free support by persons who have passed the CCNA."
FHSU, with a national reputation as a leader in INT and distance learning, has strong academic relationships with Cisco, Sprint, Southwestern Bell, Nortel, Microsoft and Oracle. The university's chief academic officer, Dr. Larry Gould, said, "We expect to offer a growing number of information technology courses and certifications over the Internet. The Salina area is a traditional distance education service area for Fort Hays State and we want to make certain that it is well served. These courses will enhance the Salina area workforce and will be a positive for employees and employers alike."
