HAYS, KS -- Expeditions Restaurant at Fort Hays State University's Sternberg Museum of Natural History ceased operations under managers Daryl and Linda North on Dec. 31.
The restaurant will reopen, probably in about a month, with the original menu, level of service and ambiance that made it a popular choice for both museum visitors and the general public. Chartwells Dining Service, the food service contractor for FHSU, originally operated Expeditions but decided to withdraw from that responsibility because of the strain it placed on its campus operations. The Norths, ranchers from Ellis, took over management of Expeditions in September 2000, but arrangements were not working out to the satisfaction of either party.
Dr. Edward H. Hammond, FHSU president, said this morning that negotiations were already under way with a new contractor. "We regret closing the restaurant during January, but as people have often heard me say, if we can't do something first class, we don't want to do it," the president said.
With its beautiful decor and original menu, Expeditions attracted tourists as well as local residents. Together with the museum and the museum store, the restaurant adds to the excitement of the Sternberg Museum complex.
