Debate team competes in first two tournaments of the year

HAYS, KS -- Two juniors brought home a third-place finish in the first competition of the year for the Fort Hays State University Debate Team.

The team of Jason Regnier, Salina junior, and Brent Saindon, Wichita junior, tied for third while Regnier finished in ninth place as an individual speaker at the Johnson County Community College Regional Opener debate competition Sept. 23-24. The team finished the tournament with a 5-1 record.

Regnier and Joseph Ramsey, Sterling junior, also traveled to the University of Kentucky in Lexington Sept. 29- Oct. 2. FHSU debated to a 4-4 record to finish 38th out of more than 100 teams.

Debate Coach Dr. Bill Shanahan, assistant professor of communication, said this was the most difficult tournament of the year thus far.

"Though disappointing, there are many positive elements to our competition at Kentucky. We are now highly regarded by the national community," Shanahan said.
