HAYS, KS -- Leadership studies at Fort Hays State University were recognized this summer as the best leadership program in the United States. So said the Association of Leadership Educators at its conference in Toronto in July when FHSU's Leadership Studies Program was named the Outstanding Leadership Program.
"That means this was the top program in the country," said Dr. Curt Brungardt, director of the program, which is under the university's College of Business and Leadership.
FHSU's application was prepared by a graduate student in the program, Heather Smith, assisted by Brungardt and Dr. Chris Crawford, associate professor of leadership studies.
The application went to a screening committee chaired by Dr. Lynn Lovett of George Mason University, Washington, D.C.
Lovett, said Brungardt, "told me that applications from a lot of great programs were received this year, and she said they felt that Fort Hays was deserving."
"We feel really fortunate that others are impressed with our efforts and what we've been able to do," he said.
FHSU's Leadership Studies Program is now 7 years old. It offers a variety of leadership programs for students who want to enhance their college degrees with a leadership component. The program can be attached to all university degree programs and majors.
Brungardt has been with the program since its inception, and he also served on the committee that developed the program in 1992. Dr. Micol Maughan, assistant professor of business administration, is the third member of the leadership studies faculty, with Brungardt and Crawford.
This fall, said Brungardt, the leadership faculty will submit to the university's Faculty Senate a proposal to institute a major in organizational leadership.
