HAYS, KS --- The brief lull between the end of the summer session and the beginning of a new academic year is about to end, as the Fort Hays State University campus begins to stir with activity.
Orientation for new faculty was conducted Monday and Tuesday, and late enrollment for the fall semester is set for Thursday and Friday in the Dreiling Lobby in Sheridan Hall. Classes begin on Monday, Aug. 21.
The major annual event that launches the new academic year is the General Meeting for Faculty and Administration. This year, the General Meeting is set for 9 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 16, in the Beach/Schmidt Performing Arts Center in Sheridan Hall.
Dr. Edward H. Hammond, FHSU president, will give the State of the University speech. In what has become a tradition, President Hammond unveils a theme during the speech to set a tone and direction for the year. His theme last year was "Transformation."
The General Meeting also features some other important activities. Dr. Art Morin, assistant professor of political science and president of the Faculty Senate, will make opening remarks, and Dr. Larry Gould, FHSU provost, will introduce new faculty. In addition, the winners of three important awards will be announced. They are the Teacher/Scholar/Innovator of the Year, the Advisor of the Year and the President's Distinguished Scholar.
A reception for the faculty will follow the General Meeting in the Dreiling Lobby.
