Dr. King remembered through celebration, service

In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Fort Hays State University will host a day of service on Saturday, Jan. 26.

The day of service consists of a variety of community service projects that FHSU students and community members can participate in. The projects include:

An Instructional Basketball Camp, 9:45 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. at the Hays Recreation Commission. Volunteers will help instruct children from kindergarten to third grade in the fundamentals of basketball.

Students can sign up to help clean stairwells at Wooster Place on the FHSU campus from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. All cleaning supplies will be provided.

A read-a-thon will be from 1 to 4 p.m. in the Memorial Union's Black and Gold Room. Volunteers will read a variety of stories to children of various ages. Books will be provided and will be divided by age level.

Students and community members are encouraged to come in and make fleece, no-sew blankets for Project Linus from 1:30 to 5:30 p.m. in the Pioneer Room in the Memorial Union. Volunteers will assist anyone that may need help.

Volunteers are encouraged to come out and write letters from 1:30 to 5:30 p.m. in Stouffer Lounge in the Memorial Union to troops who are currently overseas, who served in past wars or who have been injured in the line of duty. Volunteers will be available to assist.

The Day of Service will conclude with the Soul Food Dinner, hosted by the Black Student Union, at 7 p.m. in the union's Fort Hays Ballroom.

An MLK celebration, "Vision of a King: Devotion to Servant Leadership and Unity through Civil Disobedience," will be at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 28, in the Memorial Union's Fort Hays Ballroom.
