Two Department of Music and Theatre concerts to close semester's music

A concert of original compositions by Fort Hays State University Department of Music and Theatre students and faculty and a band concert will close out the 2011-2012 musical season at FHSU.

The Spectrum concert, features student composers will be at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 1, in Palmer Recital Hall in Malloy Hall on the FHSU campus.

"The Spectrum Concert is an opportunity for music students studying composition to have works they've been composing this year performed in public," said Dr. Timothy Rolls, assistant professor of music and theatre.

Six students are involved this year: Steven Cornwell, Bison, senior; Hilary Shepard, instructor of music and theatre; Joe Doze, Hoisington senior; Micah Dunn, Lakin senior; Joel Zeiner, Marion senior; Evan Strong, Pratt junior; and Nathan Brown, Westphalia special student.

Tickets are $6 for adults, $4 for senior citizens and students 12 and under, and free for FHSU students with valid student ID.

The FHSU bands concert will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 4, in the Beach/Schmidt Performing Arts Center in Sheridan Hall on the Fort Hays campus.

Symphonic winds, directed by Lane Weaver, instructor of music and theatre, will perform first with "First Suite in E-flat" by Gustav Holst. Each movement will be conducted by one of the three student conductors, Brown, Malia Korbe, Hays senior, and Matt Rome, Hays junior. The second piece will be "The Finale," from Howard Hanson's second Symphony. "Godzilla Eats Las Vegas," by Eric Whitacre will end the concert.
The Wind Ensemble, directed by Dr. Jeff Jordan, associate professor of music and theatre, will end the evening with "Montenegro Fanfare," "Divertimento" (6 short pieces) by Vincent Persichetti, "Roma" by Valerie Coleman and "Song for Lyndsay" by Andrew Boysen.

"We'll also take a few minutes to recognize our graduates and present our outstanding band member awards," said Weaver
