The Department of Political Science will offer a special topics course in fall 2010 called "Current Political Issues in the Islamic World."
The class, offered as POLS 380: Topics, will be taught by FHSU's liaison for strategic partnerships in Turkey, Dr. Necati Sozuoz (neh-CHATI so-ZOO-ohs). Students will learn about current issues in the Islamic world, Middle East and Central Asia in particular.
The course will be offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 1:30 p.m., and it has no prerequisites.
"You can't turn on the TV without hearing news about political issues in the Middle East or Central Asia," said Dr. Shala Mills, chair of the Department of Political Science. "This is an opportunity for students to take a course from a Turkish professor who can talk about the events from a firsthand perspective."
"Necati is considered an expert on Middle Eastern politics and history in Turkey," said Cindy Elliott, assistant provost for strategic partnerships and dean of distance learning. "We are honored that he is willing to bring his knowledge and research to our students."
FHSU has several ties to Turkey, including student and faculty study-abroad programs with Bahcesehir University, Kavram College, Kultur University, Halic University, Maltepe University and Beykent University in Istanbul.
"We hope to bring awareness and better understanding of Turkish and Muslim culture through this class," Elliott said.
