Opera Theatre presents 'Trouble in Tahiti'

The Fort Hays State University Opera Theatre presents Leonard Bernstein's musical drama "Trouble in Tahiti" on Feb. 20 and 21 in the Felten-Start Theatre in Malloy Hall on the FHSU campus.

Bernstein, who also composed "West Side Story," set "Trouble in Tahiti" in a typical 1950s American suburb. It offers a glimpse of Dinah, her husband Sam and their young son, who appears to have a perfect life. Under this picture-perfect exterior is an unhappy marriage and a neglectful family that becomes increasingly easier to escape than repair.

Students cast in the opera are Emily Cline, Lyons special student, as Dinah; and Calder Craig, Russell junior, as Sam. Members of the trio are Alexandra Hutchison, Monument, Colo., junior; Trevor Waechter, Ulysses senior; and Karl Pratt, Hoxie senior.

The opera is directed by Dr. Joseph Perniciaro, assistant professor of music; Dr. Benjamin Morris-Cline, Department of Music chair, is the conductor; and Bruce Bardwell, assistant professor of communication studies, is the set designer.

Tickets are available at the Student Service Center in Memorial Union and cost $10 for general admission and $5 for students and seniors.
