Concerns about finding stable information technology jobs will be addressed Friday, Oct. 21, when a Fort Hays State University professor repeats for the public a presentation first given at the recent College of Business and Leadership Symposium.
Dr. Elayne Shields-Bryant, assistant professor of accounting and information systems, will speak on IT jobs, outsourcing and related issues from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. in McCartney Hall, room 109.
"I thought the topic may be of interest to the public -- high school students, college students, businesses and any individual interested in an IT career," she said.
This presentation gives business students majoring in information systems guidance on obtaining an IT position with the least likelihood of being outsourced overseas while providing an analysis of curriculum offered by the Colleges of Business in Kansas Regent Universities.
Students are also instructed on the qualities sought by U.S. employers in today's globally competitive IT work environment. Suggestions are also offered to educational administrators on how to improve the required curriculum.
"There has been a great deal of talk about the lack of IT jobs and concern about overseas outsourcing," said Shields-Bryant.
"This presentation addresses these concerns and provides data pertaining to the future growth of IT jobs," she said. "IT positions are not just limited to corporate America. Agricultural organizations, large and small, need IT professionals. In fact, one of my students recently accepted an IT position at a feedlot. She uses technology to manage and monitor business at the feedlot."
University and college administrators are able to gain an understanding of what curriculum and knowledge business students will need if they choose to seek employment with an IT company.
Finally, corporate executives and managers will also be able to gain insight into what a student majoring in IT should possess after attending a college of business in a Kansas Regent university.
