Fox sports features FHSU intern on camera
11/30/2009

Kyle Haas, Arkansas City junior, was featured on the Fox Sports broadcast of the University of Kansas vs. Fort Hays State University basketball game on Nov. 3 in Lawrence.

Haas, who was an intern at Fox Sports Midwest Broadcasting for the Kansas City Royals, was seen by hundreds of thousands of viewers when the announcers brought him on camera and talked with him about his internship at Fox Sports.

"It was great to give some publicity back to FHSU," said Haas. "They’ve provided me with so many opportunities in my education, it's nice to return the favor."

The cherry on top came when announcer Dave Armstrong commented that he wished he had that kind of opportunity when he was in college.

"It's not a student from KU or KSU up here doing this internship," said Haas. "It’s a Tiger from FHSU."

Haas does floor directing, asks questions post-game and does practice interviews to create news clips that can be used when he graduates in his job search. He also spends time shadowing announcers.

"I am getting a lot of exposure for my portfolio," said Haas. "It wouldn’t have been possible without FHSU. Everyone greeted me with a smile, called me by name and made me feel like I was in my niche."

Haas got a feel for the limelight as well.

"A few area people recognized me," Haas said. "It's very humbling to be noticed like that."
