For a cultural and educational experience, Fort Hays State University's Department of Modern Languages will sponsor a trip to France and Belgium in the spring of 2010. Tournai, Belgium, Lille and Chartres are on the itinerary.
During an 11-day stay, the group will enjoy cultural experiences which will concentrate on history, architecture, art, language and literature. They will also have the opportunity to explore the various parts of Paris and participate in recreational activities. Students, friends, family and community members are encouraged to participate.
In Brussels, Belgium, the "capital of Europe," the group will tour the Royal Museum of Fine Art and the Royal Museum for Central Africa. In Tournai, they will tour one of Belgium's cathedrals, and other Flemish buildings. In to Paris, the group will tour the Louvre, home of the Mona Lisa. In Lille, France's fourth largest city, participants will tour the second-biggest art museum, the Palais des Beaux-Arts. Finally, they will move to Chartres where they will see one of France's gothic cathedrals.
FHSU students are eligible to earn two credits as field studies in modern languages. No French is required, although in certain areas knowledge of the French language will be useful. The program is a tour. There will be no classroom teaching.
The tour dates will be March 11-22. Cost for transportation, museums and lodging is $2,195. Transportation to Kansas City and airport parking are not included. An additional $400 is suggested for food. The application deadline is Friday, Dec. 11. A deposit, estimated at about $600, is due Friday, Jan. 15. The balance of the price of the plane ticket will be due on Friday, Feb. 5. Finally, the remaining balance will be due Friday, Feb. 19. Exact deposit amounts will be announced at a later date.
