Mortar Board chapter receives national award

Fort Hays State University's Gold Cord chapter of Mortar Board has been recognized with a Silver Torch Award for excellence in academics, leadership and service by the national organization.

Mortar Board is a national honor society for college seniors who reach high academic achievements and excel in leadership and service.

Gold Cord was recognized at the recent Mortar Board National Conference in Chicago, Ill. The FHSU chapter was among 67 to receive special recognition. The Silver Torch Award is given to chapters "exemplifying the ideals of scholarship, leadership and service."

Founded in 1918 with four chapters, Mortar Board now has 227 collegiate chapters and nearly a quarter of a million initiated members in 47 states.

FHSU Chapter President Chris Rohr, Colby senior, was present to accept the award. The Gold Cord chapter was chartered in 1971 and has 16 active members.
