Two student groups at Fort Hays State University are working together to bring a tradition back for this year's Homecoming festivities. On Thursday, Sept. 24, Tigers4Life and the FHSU fraternity and sorority community will sponsor the Tiger Bonfire & Concert Stampede on the FHSU campus.
Festivities begin at 7:30 p.m. on the lawn near the Robbins Center with the Tiger bonfire and pep rally. Members of the football team, the coaching staff, Victor E. Tiger, the FHSU marching band, cheerleaders and the 2009 Homecoming king and queen candidates will be on hand.
Kyle Haas, a junior in information networking and telecommunications from Arkansas City, will serve as emcee. FHSU President Edward H. Hammond will introduce the 2009 Alumni and Presidential Award winners and conduct the countdown to the ignition of the bonfire.
Following the bonfire and pep rally, at 9 p.m., Plan B will take the stage in the east VIP parking lot at Gross Memorial Coliseum for the Concert Stampede. Plan B has been entertaining audiences with its wide range of rock and roll covers and original music since its 2006 inception in Hays.
All FHSU students, alumni and friends are invited to join in the festivities. Various food and beverage vendors will be on hand during both events. Those attending are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets. All events are open to the public and provided free of charge. In the case of inclement weather, the concert will be moved to the Beach/Schmidt Performing Arts Center in Sheridan Hall.
The Homecoming parade will be at 1 p.m. on Main Street, and the Tiger football team will host Emporia State University at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 26 for this year's homecoming battle.
