Hispanic technology organization visits FHSU campus
09/16/2009

Hispanic Educational Technology Services, an organization dedicated to enhancing Hispanic student success and higher education opportunities, recently came to the Fort Hays State University campus to promote their First Annual Best Practices Showcase, which will take place Jan. 12-13, 2010, in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

FHSU became an institutional member of HETS during the 2008-2009 academic school year, making it the only institutional member in the state of Kansas.

Martha Perkins Hinojosa, director of the FHSU Higher Education Opportunity Center in Garden City, guided two HETS representatives on their whirlwind tour of Hays and the FHSU campus. They also visited with FHSU faculty. Perkins said she hopes to attend the conference as a representative of FHSU.

The conference will allow multiple representatives from each of 29 institutions to come, expanding from the traditional meetings with just the university presidents.

“All those who want to go are welcome to come to Puerto Rico ... and meet all the colleagues, all the peers, from other institutions,” said Yubelkys Montalvo (pronounced youBELLkeys mahnTALLvoh), HETS executive director.

According to its vision statement, HETS strives “to become the leading Hispanic bilingual technology-oriented consortium to efficiently and effectively enhance Hispanic student success and opportunities in higher education.”

The showcase will include presentations and information in four different areas: Best Institutional Practices Using and Implementing Technology Resources and Infrastructure, Best Practices in Teaching and Learning through Technology, Best Practices in Faculty Development, and Best Practices in Student Support Services.

HETS also has an online Testing and Education Reference Center, which offers free trial tests for the Graduate Record Examination, Medical College Admission Test, Graduate Management Admission Test, Law School Admission Test, Test of English as a Foreign Language, NCLEX (nursing) and more. FHSU students can take these to prepare for the actual exams at no cost. The testing center also includes features that assist students in creating resumes.
