Fraternities and sororities receive achievement Awards

Fort Hays State University’s fraternity and sorority community concluded its recent annual celebration known as Greek Weekend with an Awards Ceremony and an all-Greek formal.

Many awards were given to individual members as well as chapter houses. Awards were based on grade point average, campus involvement, new member activity and community service.

The Greek community awarded the following individual students, listed by hometowns:
Augusta: Charles Keefer, senior, Outstanding Fraternity Member.
Burden: Jillian Tatum, junior, Outstanding Sorority New Member.
Kearney, Neb.: Talisha Krason, junior, Outstanding Sorority Member.
Prairie Village: Emily Shoemaker, senior, Outstanding Senior Sorority Member.
Raymond: Josh Taylor, junior, Outstanding Fraternity New Member.
Winfield: Fawn Kidder, senior, Outstanding Senior Sorority Member.

This year, the Alpha Omega Academic Achievement award, was created to recognize individual members achieving a 3.75 or higher GPA.


The following members received this award:
Abilene: Steve Leyerzapf, junior.
Argonia: Bryce Allen, junior.
Beloit: Grace Finney, senior.
Burden: Jillian Tatum, junior.
Colby: Amanda McIlnay, senior.
DeSoto Sheridan Thompson junior.
Grand Island, Neb.: Chris Lonergan, senior.
Hays: Riana Legleiter, senior and Jennifer Pfannenstiel, junior.
Kenesaw, Neb.: Melissa Ramsey, freshman.
Morrowville Justin Lehman, senior.
Newton: Scott Brack, senior.
Norton: Gena Myers, junior.
Ulysses: Britton Horton, senior.

The Panhellenic Council awarded the following awards to the chapters for the spring 2008 semester: highest new member GPA, Delta Zeta; highest active member GPA, Alpha Gamma Delta; highest overall GPA, Alpha Gamma Delta. For the fall 2008 semester: highest new member GPA, Alpha Gamma Delta; highest active member GPA, Alpha Gamma Delta; highest overall GPA, Alpha Gamma Delta. Also, Alpha Gamma Delta received the campus/community involvement award, while Delta Zeta received the philanthropy/community service award.

The Interfraternity Council awarded the following awards for the spring 2008 semester to the chapter: highest new member GPA, Sigma Alpha Epsilon; highest active member GPA, Alpha Gamma Rho; highest overall GPA, Alpha Gamma Rho. For the fall 2008 semester: highest new member GPA, Sigma Alpha Epsilon; highest active member GPA, Sigma Alpha Epsilon; highest overall GPA, Sigma Alpha Epsilon. Then Sigma Chi received the campus/community involvement award and the intramural award.

Finally, the community awarded the Dr. Herb Songer Outstanding Chapter Award. This award was established in the 2007-2008 academic year in honor of the retired vice president for student affairs, Dr. Herb Songer. “We wanted to recognize him through creating this award,” said Chandra Daffer, director of the Center for Student Involvement.  

This award is based on scholarship, character, leadership, teamwork, service and brotherhood and sisterhood. Alpha Gamma Delta received this award, as they excelled in all of these areas over the past academic year.

To conclude the awards ceremony, the Sigma Chi fraternity was named the 2009 Greek Weekend champions.
