BUYER BEWARE: FHSU advises students preparing for graduation to avoid problems by using recommended vendor
03/02/2009

Graduation can be a very hectic time for many Fort Hays State University students. Ordering announcements, planning celebrations, hunting for that dream job and, don’t forget, finishing up the school year can weigh heavily on the minds of soon-to-be grads. In the rush of it all, it may be tempting to cut corners, but buyer beware: Students may unknowingly pay for sub-standard or even unnecessary products.

Enterprising companies that deal in graduation paraphernalia will target FHSU seniors this spring in an attempt to sell their products. Remember: Grads pay a $50 graduation fee at FHSU for a reason.

"By paying this fee, you are entitled to a gown or hood, a cap and a tassel from the Fort Hays State University Bookstore at no charge. The bookstore will  be sending  out regalia information later this spring to all potential graduates," said Dr. Joey Linn, registrar. "If you decide to purchase regalia from an outside company, you would basically be paying twice, and FHSU cannot guarantee and match as far as color and style."

Announcements, however, are not included in the $50 graduation fee..

"We fully appreciate the creativity of today's student as more and more are electing to create their own announcements," said Debra Prideaux, executive director of alumni and governmental relations. "However, for those who choose, CB Announcements in Manhattan, Kan., provides a full array of high -quality graduation supplies at an affordable price. We are very pleased to be associated with CB Announcements; they are the company of choice for today's FHSU students."

University officials decided to issue a reminder about the graduation process after they became aware recently of a solicititation to students that included the offer of a cap and gown. Students who decided to act on that offer would be paying twice for the same thing.

CB Announcements is the official provider of graduation products for FHSU graduates. The company is known for high quality products, exceptional service and guaranteed delivery. FHSU's partnership with CB Announcements not only protects
students, it also provides revenue that the university applies to the graduate/faculty brunch, Grad Fest, the Torch and Pilot Awards, and other programs for FHSU graduates. So grads don’t just get high -quality announcements, they provide benefits for FHSU in the process.
