Students in grades four through 12 in western Kansas have the opportunity to compete in the first Science and Engineering Fair on March 7 at Fort Hays State University. Registration begins at 8 a.m., and judging begins at 9:45 a.m. The deadline for entry is Feb. 23.
Teams will research topics and create displays to show off their findings. Students may participate individually or in groups of three and will compete in the following categories: Behavioral and Social Sciences; Botany and Zoology; Cellular Biology; Chemistry; Earth and Space Science; Engineering; Environmental Science and Energy; Physical Science; and Computer Science and Mathematics.
"The science and engineering fair will provide an arena for students to showcase their ideas and talents as well as learn from their peers," said Heather Schnelle, coordinator of the Science and Engineering Fair. The organizers of the event plan to hold it annually.
Winners of each category will earn entry into the Kansas State Science and Engineering Fair on April 3 and 4 in Wichita.
