FHSU to celebrate year of science, events planned

Several events, including two separate birthday celebrations for Charles Darwin, are scheduled for the February celebrations for the Year of Science 2009 at Fort Hays State University.

Scientific landmarks celebrated this year include Darwin's 200th birthday and the 150th anniversary of the publication of his "On the Origin of Species."

February's theme is evolution, and the departments of Biological Sciences and Geosciences have planned a birthday party for Darwin at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 12, in Albertson Hall, room 303. The Sternberg Museum of Natural History will celebrate the birth of the pioneer of evolutionary biology at 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 21, in the Sternberg Museum's Engel Education Center with a presentation by Dr. David Armstrong titled "The Darwinian Revolution: A Progress Report."

Feb. 16: 3:30 p.m., Geosciences Travelogue: Dr. Ron Schott, "Cascade Range Volcanoes," Pioneer Room, Memorial Union.
