Opera theater, area middle school students to perform children's opera
01/26/2009

Dr. Joseph Perniciaro (pronounced pear-nih-CHAIR-oh) and the Fort Hays State University Opera Theatre will present the children’s opera "The Little Match Girl" and selections from "Sleeping Beauty" and "Beauty and the Beast," with music by Richard Faith and libretto by Michael Ard. Members of the children's choir from Kennedy and Felten Middle Schools will also perform, under the direction of Johnny Matlock.

Performances will be at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 31, and 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 1, in Felten-Start Theatre in Malloy Hall on the FHSU campus. Prices are $10 for adults and $5 for students or seniors.

"The Little Match Girl" was composed in 1978 and premiered in 1979 in Tucson, Ariz. All previous productions of this opera used piano accompaniment derived from the orchestration.  The upcoming performances at FHSU mark the regional premiere of “The Little Match Girl” and also the premiere of the composer's orchestration of the opera, said Perniciaro.

Because of the lyrically beautiful music of The Little Match Girl, Perniciaro said, he chose other selections from Richard Faith's "Beauty" operas, "Sleeping Beauty" and "Beauty and the Beast," to add to the program.  His music is melodic, rhapsodic, and very accessible to adults and children.

Running time is approximately 70 minutes.
