Returning to school as a non-traditional student? Free workshop at FHSU offers tips for college success
12/23/2008

It can be a big step to enroll at Fort Hays State University or some other program of advanced education several years after graduating from high school or quitting college. With so much at stake for the returning student, FHSU is offering a free workshop to help that student succeed.

Individuals who are coming back to school or just thinking about coming back to school should attend the workshop "College Success for Non-Traditional Students," which is scheduled for 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2009, at Chuck's Place in Wiest Hall.

Maggie Denning, coordinator of academic success programs for FHSU's Kelly Center, will be the lead presenter. Other Kelly Center staff will also be available to answer questions.

Denning said the workshop will cover such topics as time management, handling stress, study strategies and fitting in, which will enable returning students to succeed in their college careers. While the workshop is sponsored by FHSU's Kelly Center, Denning said it is open to students who are returning to other universities, the North Central Kansas Technical College in Hays, or a trade school such as beauty academies. Also, while non-traditional students are the primary focus of the workshop, traditional-aged students who believe they could benefit are also welcome to attend.

The workshop is free, but registration is required. To register, call (785) 628-4401 before 4:30 p.m. on Jan. 7, the day of the workshop.

The Kelly Center is committed to helping FHSU students, faculty and staff be successful in their personal development. The Center provides Personal Counseling Services for guiding personal growth, Academic Success Programs for enhancing academic skills, Testing Services for administering national examinations and the Drug and Alcohol Wellness Network for preventing and treating alcohol and drug abuse. The Kelly Center also serves as a training institute for students pursuing careers in mental health professions.
