Fort Hays State University choral groups are preparing to spread the Christmas spirit in song with the 26th annual Cathedral Concerts at St. Fidelis Church in Victoria, scheduled for 3 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 14.
Brainstorming for the event began after last year's concert, and performers have been in heavy preparation.
Terry Crull, instructor of music, said he is looking forward to seeing large crowds that enjoy carols and appreciate the beauty of the choirs and the acoustics of St. Fidelis. "And, as always, to conducting my choirs in that gorgeous place," said Crull.
Performers include the Fort Hays Singers, FHSU Concert Choir, Hays High School Chamber Singers, Hays Community Choir, Oakley High School Plainsmen Singers, FHSU Chamber Orchestra and FHSU Flute Choir.
Crull said some of the songs will be performed by combined choirs, which is a first for the concert. This year's guest choir, the Plainsmen Singers from OHS, is making its first appearance in the concert.
FHSU choirs are conducted by Crull with Pam McGowne, program specialist and staff accompanist for the Department of Music, as accompanist. The FHSU Chamber Orchestra is conducted by Ben Morris-Cline, chair of the Department of Music, and the FHSU flute choir is directed by Hilary Shepard,
Each choir will perform three songs, and the congregation is invited to stand and sing along with a few famous tunes.
The concert is free and open to everyone. For more information, call the Department of Music at (785) 628-4533.
