Riffel awarded March of Dimes grant for work with women

Kim Riffel, associate professor of nursing at Fort Hays State University, has been awarded a $5,596 Community Grant from the March of Dimes' Greater Kansas Chapter to expand two community projects.

In one, between the university's Department of Nursing and the Mary Elizabeth Maternity Home, Riffel said, nursing students are involved in service learning in providing education to maternity home residents on pregnancy, childbirth and infant care.

In the proposal she submitted to the March of Dimes, Riffel wrote that the two programs help in reducing risks in two groups of women, "pregnant teenagers transitioning through a local maternity home and women who are homebound due to pregnancy complications." The grant would also, she said, "address March of Dimes funding priorities for pregnant women, including education on smoking cessation, the impact of drug and alcohol use in pregnancy, the benefits of folic acid intake, and prevention of SIDS."

The March of Dimes, in a statement of funding priorities for its 2008 Community Grants Request for Proposals, said its mission is "improving the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality," and would give priority to projects that, "based on community needs, address increased access to health care and/or prevention services to help reduce disparities in preterm birth."
