FHSU Commencement on Saturday will attract Virtual College graduates from afar

It may be the only time they ever set foot on the campus of Fort Hays State University, but at least 27 Virtual College students will travel to Hays this weekend to take part in Commencement at Fort Hays State University.

The 27 students have made reservations for the Virtual College Graduate Breakfast at 8 a.m. Saturday in the Robbins Center. Additional Virtual College students likely will be in attendance at Commencement, which is set for 10 a.m. in Gross Memorial Coliseum. There are 268 Virtual College students from 37 states and three foreign nations, plus another 600 at partner universities in China, who will be receiving FHSU degrees this spring.

For the past few years, the Virtual College Graduate Breakfast has attracted graduates from elsewhere in the United States and from overseas, along with family members, friends, and FHSU faculty and staff.

A couple of new things have been added this year. There will be a social gathering for the graduates at 5:30 Friday night at Thirsty's Brew Pub & Grill, which will give the Virtual College staff an opportunity to visit about ways to improve distance education and enhance the course offerings. In addition, the Saturday breakfast will be videotaped -- including personal messages from the graduates in attendance -- and posted to the FHSU YouTube page, http://www.youtube.com/user/forthaysstate. Graduates can view themselves on the graduation channel extension of YouTube, at http://www.youtube.com/user/fhsugraduation.

Note to Editors/News Directors: The media are welcome to visit with the graduates and their families at the Friday night social gathering and the Saturday morning breakfast. Another possible Commencement story would be Kerrie Olson, from Oberlin, who has an amazing FHSU pedigree. When she graduates on Saturday, she will join her father and mother and two siblings as FHSU graduates. In addition, she has two aunts, two uncles and six cousins who either attended, are attending or graduated from FHSU. If you wish to visit with Kerrie Olson, you are welcome to call her on her cell phone at (785) 475-4483.
