Fort Hays State University's Center for Civic Leadership and Small Business Development Center are offering a two-part workshop for managers -- Improving Workforce Performance.
The workshop will be from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Oct. 18 at the Sternberg Museum of Natural History, 3000 Sternberg Drive.
Supervisory Training, the first part, ends at noon. Topics to be covered include Roles of Supervisor and Subordinate, Delegation and Empowerment, Leadership Styles, Motivating Employees, Resolving Conflict, Effective Communication, Effective Discipline, Ethics/Ethical Work Climate and Resistance to Change.
These topics are directed at both beginning or experienced supervisors, with the primary goal of exploring the role of an effective supervisor, the importance of leadership and how to solve problems associated with supervision and integrating positive communication within the workplace.
Part 2, Successful Teambuilding, runs from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. Topics are Advantages of Working in Teams, Characteristics of Effective Teams, Barriers to Teamwork, Team Cohesiveness and Group Thinking, Conflict Management Strategies, Conducting Effective Meetings, Team Problem Solving and Decision Making, Developing Effective Teams and Reaching Successful Collaboration.
Actual workplace teams are encouraged to attend the second session. Discussions will be geared toward the characteristics of effective teams and their advantages while learning to break down the barriers that can arise within a team.
The guest speakers are Dr. Curt Brungardt and Michael Kearns.
Brungardt, Voss Endowed Professor of Leadership Studies, is an active researcher, publisher and consultant in organizational leadership development and has published more than a dozen articles and several books in the field of leadership studies.
Kearns has more than 15 years of experience as a teacher in areas of leadership, political science and geography. He is the newest member of FHSU's Department of Leadership Studies. His expertise includes leadership philosophy, organizational ethics and postmodern issues.
Registration for the Supervisory Training and Successful Teambuilding workshop is $75 for each section, $150 for both. Registration deadline is Oct. 11. Late registration is $90 for each section, $180 for both.
