SBDC offers tax workshops in October

Fort Hays State University's Small Business Development Center will offer two separate tax workshops in October -- Small Business Tax and Contractor Tax. Each workshop will be held in Colby, Hays and Great Bend.

Small Business Tax will be offered in Colby from 1 to 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 11, at the Chamber Office, 350 S. Range; in Hays, from 1 to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 12, at the Sternberg Museum of Natural History, 3000 Sternberg Drive; and in Great Bend from 9 a.m. to noon on Thursday, Oct. 13 at the Golden Belt 1 Stop, 1025 Main.

The Small Business Tax workshop will help in clarifying important topics that can seem to be time-consuming and often confusing for business owners. Two main topics are Sales Tax and Withholding Tax.

The Sales Tax presentation will cover subjects concerning Kansas Retailers' Sales Tax, Kansas Retailers' Compensating Use Tax, Kansas Consumers' Compensating Use Tax, Goods & Services Subject to Sales Tax, Record Keeping and Purchases with Exemption Certificates.

Withholding Tax, the second topic, will cover Kansas Income Tax Withholding Requirements, Tax Responsibilities, Filing Requirements and Form Preparation.

The Taxpayer Education Unit of Kansas Department of Revenue will present.

Registration for the Small Business Tax workshops is $35. Late registration, after Oct. 7, is $45.

Contractor Tax will be in Colby from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 11, at the Chamber Office, 350 S. Range; in Hays from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 12, at the Sternberg Museum of Natural History, 3000 Sternberg Drive; and in Great Bend from 1 to 3 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 13, at the Golden Belt 1 Stop, 1025 Main.

The Contractor Tax workshop helps to clarify important topics for those in the construction, installation or similar businesses. The workshop is jointly sponsored by SBDC and the Kansas Department of Revenue.

This is a special tax session just for contractors.

Topics for the Contractor Tax workshop will cover Commercial and Remodeling Projects, Sales Tax on Materials, Taxable and Exempt Labor, Project Exemption Certificates and Construction for Farmers.

Registration for the Contractor Tax workshop, by Oct. 7 is $45. Late registration is $55.
