A season of musical enchantment at FHSU starting with an evening of pops
08/30/2007

In 1982, Fort Hays State University was a swinging place, complete with a big band, Pops Concert and dance. This year, the Department of Music is going back to the good ol' days.

After three years of no Pops in the plans, the big band's back with "An Evening of Pops" at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 15 in Beach/Schmidt Performing Arts Center in Sheridan Hall on the FHSU campus.

Former FHSU band director and Hays Symphony Guild member Lyle Dilley had the idea to start Pops up again for the community's listening enjoyment and as a way to raise money for scholarships and other expenses of the Music Department.

In collaboration with the Hays Symphony, "An Evening of Pops" will include music from popular Broadway musicals, a Dixieland band, the Hays Barbershop Chorus, the FHSU Singers, several soloists and even some audience participation.

Dilley said that if the program had a theme, it would be, "music that you've enjoyed hearing before and will enjoy hearing again."

"It's not a formal concert, it's just a fun program," he said.

Some FHSU faculty members performing are Brad Dawson, assistant professor of music; Terry Crull, instructor; Matt Means, assistant professor; and Kay Werth, instructor, along with community members.

The program is a family-friendly show and will "expose folks to a little something different than what they're listening to," said Dilley.

This year, the program is a result of creative fundraising with the admission charges going towards the department, but if it's a well-received program, as it once was, there will be discussions on making it an annual event.

The admission is $10 for adults and $6 for seniors. Children 12 and under get in free. Tickets are available at Midwest Music, 807 Main, and at the door the night of the concert.

"An evening of Pops" is a way to start the year off with a bang and is only the first of many performances.

Performers include Dawson, trumpet; Means, violin; Dr. Paula Boire, professor, vocals; Gary Brattin, assistant professor, euphonium; Joe Perniciaro, instructor, tenor; Dr. Kristin Pisano, assistant professor, clarinet; Linda Antas, assistant professor, flute; Ben Morris-Cline, chair of the department, cello; Tali Morgulis, assistant professor, piano; and Kay Werth, instructor, oboe d'amore; Tom Meagher, Wilson Elementary School principal, piano.
