Two new scholarships will be offered to Fort Hays State University chemistry and nursing students.
Gene Schmidt of Tulsa, Okla., a 1961 graduate of FHSU with a degree in chemistry recently established the Marie J. Schmidt Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship will be offered to sophomore students majoring in chemistry with a preference for those pursuing an emphasis in environmental or forensic chemistry.
Schmidt used the Pension Protection Act to transfer funds from his IRA directly to a charity without incurring taxable income. For more information on the Pension Protection Act, contact the FHSU Endowment Association or your financial advisor.
Anges R. M. (Ruth) Orrison's family recently established an endowed scholarship for nursing majors at FHSU. Orrison worked as a nurse alongside her husband, the late Dr. William Warren Orrison, until his death in 1973. She continued her nursing career as a private duty nurse at the former Hadley Medical Center until she retired in 1991.
The Anges R. M. Orrison Nursing Scholarship honors her many years of nursing care for patients in the Plains, Meade and Hays communities.
Contributions to either fund can be sent to the FHSU Endowment Association, P. O. Box 1060, Hays, Kan. 67601. For more information on either of these scholarships, contact FHSU's Endowment Association at (888) 628-1060 or www.fhsuendowment.com.
