The Fort Hays State University Accounting Club is offering free income tax preparation for the 2007 tax season. The FHSU students are qualified to prepare 1040EZ, 1040A and 1040 forms as well as itemized deductions, interest and dividends through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program.
Low to moderate income ($35,000 and below) people are eligible to receive assistance from these qualified FHSU students. No appointments are needed. The program operates on a first-come, first-served basis.
"We are really excited," said Alicia Tubbs, president of the Accounting Club. "This is our chance to give back to the community, and the more people who know about this, the more people can benefit."
Dr. Charles Gnizak, assistant professor of accounting and information systems and Accounting Club sponsor, said this is his sixth year supervising the program, but he believes it has been active for at least 10 years.
"The area we usually serve is Ellis County," said Gnizak. "However, there are no restrictions on the area, and once in a while we will have people coming from outside of Ellis County for help will their taxes."
Gnizak said the Accounting Club usually serves from 220 to 250 people each year.
Participants must bring photo Identification; Social Security cards for themselves, their spouses and any dependents; a current year's tax package if they received one; wage and earning statements from all employers and banks; and any other relevant information about income and expenses. Bank routing numbers and account numbers should be brought for direct deposit.
To file taxes electronically on a married filing joint tax return, both spouses must be present to sign required forms.
