FHSU alumnus named 2006 Oregon Outstanding Social Studies Educator of the Year

Only 14 months after receiving his master's degree online from Fort Hays State University, Andrew Demko has been named 2006 Oregon Outstanding Social Studies Educator of the Year.

Demko received his master's degree in liberal studies in 2005. He currently teaches social studies at Prairie City School in Prairie City, Ore.

"I chose FHSU because it has a history program that I could complete from my rural residence," said Demko. "It is also convenient for someone who teaches full time during the week."

Demko learned about his award while attending the Oregon Council for the Social Studies fall conference.

"Receiving this award is truly an honor," said Demko. "It would be difficult to say why I received it over the other nominees. We each bring something unique to our classrooms. I like to use a variety in my teaching such as skits, presentations and music from the time period or country we are studying. Another teacher and I started a program called Camp Logan Days, which is a living history reenactment of the year 1867. It has been a great opportunity for the school and community to work and learn together."
