Collegiate flavor for high school hoops: FHSU will bring excitement, information to Abilene/Chapman basketball contests

In an innovative attempt to share information and create a collegiate atmosphere, representatives from Fort Hays State University will attend the varsity basketball games between Abilene and Chapman High Schools on Tuesday night, Jan. 9, in Abilene.

FHSU representatives will include cheerleaders, the Victor E. Tiger mascot and the Trash Can Band -- a student group that uses trash can lids and other improvised instruments to produce rousing music.

FHSU representatives will be stationed at tables in the gym to distribute information about the university and to answer general questions about higher education. The university will also provide free popcorn to be handed out at the concession stand in FHSU cups, and there will be a drawing for a free iPod.

FHSU cheerleaders will perform at halftime of the varsity girls' game, and the Trash Can Band will perform at halftime of the varsity boys' game. Cheerleaders will paint faces during the evening and will toss FHSU T-shirts into the crowd during time-outs in both games. Alumni Association representatives will also attend the basketball games to greet FHSU alumni.

The FHSU representatives also recently visited Garden City for the varsity basketball games between Garden City and Derby High Schools, and Wichita for the season opening varsity game between Wichita North High School and Kapaun-Mt. Carmel Catholic High School.
