Dr. Maurice Witten, who spent 38 years teaching physics at Fort Hays State University before retiring in 1998, was recently selected as a posthumous recipient of the 2006 Kansas Governors Aviation Honor Award.
According to the Kansas Aviation Museum Web site, "The Kansas Governor's Aviation Honor Award was created to preserve the memory of outstanding aviation contributions by citizens of the state of Kansas."
Witten, who died in Nov. 2002, will be inducted into the Kansas Aviation Museum Hall of Fame on Nov. 18.
Witten began his career at FHSU in 1960. He was the chair of the physics department from 1969 to 1989. He served in the United States Air Force from 1950 to 1953 and was a member of the FHSU Endowment Association Board of Trustees, the Civil Air Patrol, served on the Hays Airport Advisory Board, the Kansas Association of Teachers of Science, past president of the National Science Teachers Association, American Association of Physics Teachers, Kansas Academy of Science, National Council for Aerospace Education and was a Grant Reviewer for the National Science Foundation.
