It's time to saddle up and ride again for the Fort Hays State University rodeo team, which kicked off its fall season with the Colby Community College N.I.R.A. Rodeo, Sept. 29-Oct. 1.
Of the 23 colleges and universities from Kansas and Oklahoma participating, the FHSU women's team took fourth place and the men's team stood ninth.
The rodeo started on Friday morning with the long round, where all 565 competitors competed for a qualifying position in the short round. Sunday's short round was the top 10 competitors for the weekend in each event. These competitors tried for team and individual points for that day as well as average points. The average was the combined score or time of the competitors who made two qualifying performances. This time or score ultimately determined the champions of each event.
Brooke Inlow, Oakley junior, led FHSU's women by winning the goat tying event. She had the fastest time in the long round and fourth fastest time in the short round, giving her the fastest average on two head. Inlow also competed in the barrel racing and the breakaway roping.
Chris Sherman, Brule, Neb., junior, and his partner Ben Robinson, Colby Community College freshman, split third and fourth in the long round of the team roping event. Splitting second and third in the short round gave them a second-place finish. Sherman also competed in the tie-down roping.
Travis Thimesch, Spivey junior, and Kayla Watts, Ottawa freshman, qualified for the short round. Thimesch, who also competes in the steer wrestling and the team roping, split a ninth and 10th place in bareback riding. Watts, who also competes in goat tying, was sixth in the breakaway roping. The short round proved challenging as neither recorded a qualified score or time.
"We had good results from both teams, but we saw some first rodeo jitters coming out," said Dr. Gary Brower, rodeo coach. "Now that the first one is out of the way, we are ready to really step it up this weekend."
The team is entered next at the Pratt Community College N.I.R.A. Rodeo Oct. 6-8. Long round performances will be Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday at 1:30 p.m. The short round will be at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday.
