Mortar Board, the national honor society for college seniors, has recognized Fort Hays State University's Gold Cord Leadership Chapter with the Silver Torch Award for the 2005-2006 academic year.

FHSU's award is one of only 40 given nationwide to recognize timeliness and dedication in the ideals of scholarship, leadership and service on the chapter level.

FHSU's Gold Cord Leadership chapter was chartered in 1971. The national organization, founded in 1918 in four institutions, has grown to include 214 collegiate and 43 alumni chapters with more than 240,000 initiated members.
