Fort Hays State University has recently filled vacancies at five top administrative posts: vice president for administration and finance; athletic director; Memorial Union director; dean of the College of Business and Leadership; and dean of the College of Education and Technology.
Michael W. "Mike" Barnett was named the university's new vice president for administration and finance. Barnett, who earned a bachelor's degree from FHSU in 1979, returned to FHSU from Metropolitan State College of Denver, CO, where he was the vice president for administration and finance. Barnett assumed his new duties at FHSU on April 5.
Curtis Hammeke began as the university's new director of athletics on June 6. Hammeke received a bachelor's degree in physical education and a master's in athletic administration from FHSU. He was previously the director of athletics at Newman University, Wichita, KS. He has been an athletic director at Butler County Community College, El Dorado, and Great Bend High School. He also coached baseball at FHSU and BCCC.
William G. Smriga was named in May as the new director of the Memorial Union. Smriga received a bachelor?s of science, arts and sciences, from Indiana University in Bloomington, IN, a master of science in college student personnel administration from Indiana University and his post-master's certificate of advanced studies in organizational development from Loyola University in Chicago, IL. Smriga has worked as a director for Missouri Unions, as associate director for Student Auxiliary Services in Colombia, MO, and as an executive director for Hostelling International in Chicago before coming to FHSU.
Dr. Steve Williams, professor of management and marketing and chair of Fort Hays State University's Department of Management and Marketing, began new duties as the university's dean of the College of Business and Leadership on June 6. Williams came to FHSU in April 2003 from the Jesse H. Jones School of Business at Texas Southern University, Houston, where he was a professor of management. He began at FHSU as a consultant in the College of Business and Leadership and was named a full-time professor of management and marketing and chair of the department on June 22, 2003.
Dr. Guy E. "Ed" Mills was named May 9 as the new dean of the College of Education and Technology. Mills comes to FHSU from Pacific University in Forest Grove, OR, where he was dean of the College of Education. Mills earned a bachelor of arts degree in education from the University of Missouri-Kansas City, master of science and educational specialist degrees from Central Missouri State University in Warrensburg and a doctorate in education from the University of Missouri-Columbia.
