HAYS, KS -- Memorial Union at Fort Hays State University will be open during the 18-month, $7.2 million renovation scheduled to begin in October. Union Director Bill Smriga said the final decision was made July 25.
The original plan had been to keep the union open, but further discussions of cost-benefit and construction time brought the possibility of closing up for reconsideration. But that issue is now settled. The union will be open. Smriga announced the decision in an e-mail across campus.
"We will do everything we can to minimize inconvenience during the renovation process and make your visit to the union as pleasant as possible," said Smriga in the e-mail. "However, a renovation project of this size will certainly impact your experience. We appreciate your patience and understanding."
The renovation will be completed in phases, meaning certain areas of the building will be open and others will be closed and brief interruptions to utilities will occur from time to time, said Smriga.
