Fort Hays State University's Department of Mathematics and Computer Science will host its 27th Annual Math Relays on Thursday, Nov. 11.
The event will start at 8 a.m. with registration at Gross Memorial Coliseum and will bring nearly 1,500 students from more than 60 Kansas high schools to FHSU to compete in six different events.
Students will participate in the following categories based upon school division and grade level.
-- Using number sense, which is recognizing alternative names for numbers, number patterns and reasonability.
-- Algebraic manipulations
-- Informal geometry, measurement, which is computing perimeters, areas and volumes of given geometric figures
-- Applications of algebra, arithmetic
-- Calculations with calculators.
Winners will be announced at 2 p.m. at the Fort Hays Ballroom in the Memorial Union. Plaques will be awarded to the top three schools in each division. Medals will also be awarded to the top three individuals in each category in each respective division with ribbons being awarded to fourth through 10th positions in each individual event in each division.
