Fort Hays State University's Crop Judging Team finished in second place behind Kansas State University at the Regional American Society of Agronomy Crops Judging Contest at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, OK, Oct. 22.
The team placed ahead of Oklahoma and several Texas universities. The contest was abbreviated.
" This was the first time I can recall a contest being delayed and finally being called because of weather," said Dr. Robert Stephenson, associate professor of agriculture and team coach.
" We had a strong thunderstorm roll through Stillwater that knocked out power. We didn't have lights and couldn't use our electronic scales."
Students who went on the trip were Karen Bortner, McCook, NE, junior; Brandon Baugh, Dodge City senior; Jon French, Hutchinson junior; Brent Kerr, Ness City sophomore; Jared Myers, Arapahoe, CO, junior; Tucker Sexson, Weskan junior; and Neil Wicke, Eaton, CO, freshman.
The next event for the team is the National American Society of Agronomy Crops Judging Contest in Kansas City, MO, later in November.
