Fort Hays State University's 39th annual N.I.R.A. Rodeo begins at noon Friday, April 23, with a free performance at the Doug Philip Arena just off the U.S. 183 Bypass west of the FHSU campus.
One other free, or "slack performance," will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday.
The rodeo goes into high gear with the first regular performance at 7:30 p.m. Friday. Saturday will see two performances, at 1:30 and 7:30 p.m.
Top 10 competitors from each event will compete in the short round for the championships beginning at 1:30 p.m. Sunday.
Admission for each event is $5 in advance and $6 at the gate. Tickets are available at Orscheln Farm and Home Supply, 2900 Broadway; Vanderbilt's, 2900 Vine; and at the Memorial Union Service Desk on the Fort Hays State University campus.
The rodeo this year will feature 617 contestants from 23 colleges and universities in Kansas, Oklahoma and Missouri.
Two special events will be a Wild Ride on Friday evening and again Saturday morning in which saddle bronc riders can dress in any costume they want.
