HAYS, KS -- A reception to honor Rae Ellen Smith, who is retiring after 28 years at Fort Hays State University, will be at 3 p.m. Monday, May 8, in the Sunset Lounge of Memorial Union.
Twenty-four of Smith's years at FHSU were in the president's office. Smith began her tenure at FHSU as a clerk-typist in the university's Office of Information Services, which is now University Relations. She came here from Kansas State University, where she spent four years in the student publications office.
"I will miss the people here very much," said Smith. "I have met and become friends with a lot of people, and I've got a lot of retired friends here, too. I've really enjoyed working with Dr. Hammond and Viv. They have done a lot for me, and I have grown professionally with Dr. Hammond."
"Rae has been a loyal and faithful servant to the university for many years," said Hammond.
"I'm honored that I have had the privilege of working with her."
Smith is bringing one life to a close but is embarking on another. In August she will be married to Herb Pfeifer and they will live in Olathe. They knew each other in high school, and dated then, but went separate ways until now.
"It will be a different life for me," she said, "but I'm looking forward to it."
She said she will also miss, at least for a while, the fast pace of being administrative assistant to Dr. Hammond.
"It will be hard for me to go at a slower pace," she said.
