Small Business Development Center to host two separate tax workshops

In an effort to help business owners and developers better understand and manage taxes, the Fort Hays State University Kansas Small Business Development Center will host two different tax workshops in mid-October.

Each workshop will deal with different topics specifically designed for a profession. Workshops will be held consecutive days in three different towns as a way to maximize outreach.

The first workshop, "The Small Business Tax Workshop," is designed for small businesses. It will deal with the issue of sales tax, including the topics of Kansas retailers' sales tax; Kansas retailers compensating use tax; Kansas consumers' compensating use tax; goods and services subject to sales tax; recordkeeping; and purchases with exemption certificates. It will also cover withholding tax, including the topics of Kansas income tax withholding requirements; tax responsibilities; filing requirements; and form preparation.

This workshop will be held from 1-4 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 12, in Colby at the Chamber Office, 350 S. Range; 1-4 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 13, in Hays at the FHSU Sternberg Museum of Natural History, 3000 Sternberg Drive; and from 9 a.m.-noon Thursday, Oct. 14, in Great Bend at the Golden Belt 1 Stop, 1025 Main.

The deadline for early registration, at a cost of $30, is Oct. 5. After Oct. 5, registration will be $45.

The second workshop, "Contractor Tax," is designed for construction and installation workers and similar service work. It will deal with the topics of commercial and remodeling projects, sales tax on materials, taxable and exempt labor, project exemption certificates and construction for farmers. A question-and-answer session will follow this session.

This workshop will be from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 12, in Colby at the Chamber Office, 350 S. Range; from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 13, in Hays at the FHSU Sternberg Museum of Natural History, 3000 Sternberg Drive; and from 1-3 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 14, in Great Bend at the Golden Belt 1 Stop, 1025 Main.

The deadline for early registration, at a cost of $40, is Oct. 5. After Oct. 5, registration will be $55.
